The benefits of being in Founder Mode (again) when growing a professional services business

If you’ve ever started a professional services business, you know the intensity of Founder Mode. You’re fully immersed, making decisions, leading, and handling just about everything. It’s a challenging but rewarding time.

If, like me, you’ve taken a break from the industry and find yourself back in Founder Mode, it can feel familiar but also new in exciting ways. Having done it before certainly brings invaluable perspective.  You have first-hand experience of what worked and what didn’t. However, time away also allows you to come back with a fresh set of eyes on the market, technology, and what your clients really need today.

As I am at the epicentre of my next venture, Ascend Payroll, I thought it would be useful to look at what I have learnt from doing it before.

The thrill of being back in the driving seat

Few things beat the excitement of being in Founder Mode again. The energy, hustle, and pure adrenaline rush of seeing your vision come to life is invigorating.

When you have had a break from an industry, especially a fast-paced one, coming back feels like a reset. Time away has certainly given me a clearer head and the space to understand the market’s landscape. The industry might have evolved, but so have you. You can draw on experience and insights, making this round of Founder Mode even more powerful.

Capitalising on what you did well before

Having been through Founder Mode before, you will have had successes and failures, so this time, you can take that knowledge and apply it to your new venture. Maybe you nailed client relationships or built a fantastic team last time. Now, you can replicate those successes with even more confidence and without any negative legacy holding you back, whether technical, cultural or financial.

You understand the critical points that move the needle for your business, whether it’s service quality, pricing strategies, or the way you manage your time. This means you can fast-track the growth process because you’re building on a solid foundation rather than starting from scratch.

Avoiding the pitfalls of the past

Equally important as building past success is knowing what to avoid. You’ve probably made mistakes the first time around; we all do. This time, you have the benefit of hindsight and this knowledge is gold.

Maybe you spread yourself too thin or misjudged the market. With those experiences in mind, you can avoid the same traps this time. It’s about working smarter, not harder, and making more strategic moves. You can delegate earlier, say no to projects that aren’t a fit, and set up systems to avoid the overwhelm that might have slowed you down before.

The clarity that comes with distance

Taking a break from the industry can be a game-changer. Stepping away gives you a rare opportunity to observe from the outside. It’s easy to miss the bigger picture when you’re in it, day in and day out.

Time away lets you return with clarity. You can see the trends and make smarter decisions because you’re not bogged down in the details. Plus, you’ve had time to recharge, giving you the mental space to be more innovative and strategic this time.

Understanding new market needs and technology

Nothing stays the same, especially where technology is involved. Technology has likely moved forward in leaps and bounds, and user expectations are probably different, too.

With a fresh set of eyes, you can better understand these shifts. Whether it’s the rise of AI tools, the growing importance of digital transformation, or new ways clients expect services to be delivered, this awareness allows you to shape

Clarity on what really matters

Another benefit of being in Founder Mode again is that you’ve had the time to refine your vision. Getting lost in the noise is easy when you are deep in the trenches of running a business. Stepping back helps you focus on the core values and goals that are most important, allowing you to approach your new business with a clear purpose and zero in on what will have the biggest impact on your clients and team.

Embrace the journey … again

Founder Mode isn’t just something to survive; it’s a journey to embrace, especially the second (or third) time around. This phase gives you the opportunity to craft a business that’s aligned with your experience, your values, and the new landscape of the industry. By blending the lessons from the past with the insights you’ve gained during your time away, you’re in an even stronger position to succeed.

Yes, it’s challenging, but having done it before gives you an edge. You know what’s coming, and you’ve got the tools to navigate it with wisdom and focus. So, if you find yourself back in Founder Mode, remember,  you’ve got this, and this time, it might just be even better than the last.
